“A solution to open heavy manhole covers by hand”
The City of Brussels contacted Hinscha in their search for a solution to open heavy manhole covers by hand. Previously, these sewer covers were opened using a crane, which posed safety risks, was time-intensive, and therefore costly.
To perform this task more efficiently and ergonomically, the option of attaching gas springs to the manhole covers was explored, allowing them to be opened without heavy physical effort.
In collaboration with our production partner, gas springs were calculated to provide sufficient force to achieve the desired result. Additionally, these gas springs needed to withstand the moist conditions of the sewers. To meet this requirement, stainless steel (SS) gas springs were chosen. These gas springs do not rust and can be used for a long time without loss of force.
